Gphone news and presentation at TechCrunch40

TechCrunch announce that Google will show “something” on “TechCrunch40″ (maybe Gphone?)

“We just got permission to post this - On top of everything else we’ve got planned, Google will present something at TechCrunch40 next week. Like the AOL and Yahoo product launches, it will not be eligible for the $50,000 top prize awarded to the best new startup product. But they will present it in front of the main crowd, and audience comments and questions will be part of the show”

Who saw Gphone?

gphone1.jpg
Someone saw the new Gphone?

One entrepreneur who has seen the Google phone prototype (Gphone), but asked not to be named, described it as “simpler” and not as flashy as Apple’s iPhone. Another entrepreneur, who saw a prototype earlier this year, described three-dimensional, animated buttons on the screen. That prototype had a small QWERTY keyboard, like a Treo or a BlackBerry, rather than relying on a touch-screen, as the iPhone does.
In August, The Wall Street Journal reported that Google had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its cellphone project, with the hope that several different manufacturers will build the phones and multiple carriers will help distribute them, with Google supplying the software and perhaps delivering ads to the devices.

gphone11.jpg

Google’s first mobile phone will run a Linux operating system (really?) on a Texas Instruments “Edge” chipset, and will likely ship to T-Mobile and Orange customers in the Spring of 2008, according to unconfirmed reports. “GPhone” call minutes and text messages reportedly will be funded by mobile advertising.

Information about Gphone

gphone1.jpg

Google Phone (or Gphone) is the suggested name of a future Google mobile phone or smartphone.

Very little news and info is known now about the Gphone. The domain name www.gphone.com belongs to another company which provides global telephone call back and connectivity services.

Reports from both the BBC and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) noted that Google wanted “Google search and Google applications on mobile, and it is working hard every day to deliver that.” Further, it’s now believed that Google is “showing the prototype to cellphone manufacturers and network operators as it continues to hone the technical specifications.”

Phoronix has reported that Google is “looking to team up with OpenMoko” for the Gphone. OpenMoko is a project to create a smartphone platform using free software, including the Linux kernel.
